The Canada Day / Westside Daze weekend has arrived, and seeing a few Warriors faces has reminded me to get caught up on a few things.
Firstly is the announcement of Max French as the BCHL’s FortisBC Energy Player of the Year for the 2013 post-season. He earned the nod in 4 of the Tribe’s 10 playoff games, and was causing his usual mayhem the whole time. Catch the release at the league’s website.
If you missed the announcement, the Warriors have made another addition to their blueline with the pickup of former Victoria Grizzlies D-man Jaden Schmeisser. Having already picked up Taylor Graham for Reid Simmonds, there’s a real veteran presence back there now. Braxton Bilous is a ’94 with 138 54 BCHL games already under his belt, and Ben Tegtmeyer and Dustin Cave both get veteran status too. And let’s not forget Adam Plant who is wise beyond his years. It’s a savvy and promising back end – which is even more important when you consider the youth up front.
The 2013-14 schedule has now been released. Check out the usual spot on the BCHL’s website to see the full version. The Warriors take on Surrey and then Nanaimo at the showcase before opening at home against Merritt on Sept. 13th. Plan your lives, people.
And finally, I had a chance to speak with former Co-Captain Joel Woznikoski the other day. We spoke about his budding career as a Delta Firefighter and looked back on the hugely successful Alumni Weekend. I’m currently testing out some new recording equipment and I would call this attempt ‘moderately successful’. It runs about 11 minutes and the audio quality is patchy. But Wozzy is always a great interview and I know he has some fans out there who would dig this.
Happy Canada Day!
